Published by Academy of Korean Studies. Which of these a scholarship covers is decided by the school.

What do I need?

• Application form, online at studyinkorea.go.kr Apply
• Personal statement on AKS's form (Attachment 2), in Korean
• Research plan on AKS's form (Attachment 3), in Korean
• Graduation certificate, or expected graduation certificate, for every previous degree
• Official transcripts for every previous degree
• TOPIK or TOPIK IBT score report, level 4 or higher
• Proof of your nationality
• Application fee, paid online
• One letter of recommendation on AKS's form (Attachment 4), emailed by your recommender to admission_intl@aks.ac.kr
• PhD applicants whose master's had a thesis: a one-page abstract of it

THE RECOMMENDATION HAS ITS OWN DEADLINE: 17:00 on 25 September for spring. It must come from your recommender's own email, ideally a professor at your university. A work supervisor who is not an academic or an expert in the field is not accepted.

IF YOU ARE ADMITTED, THE REST GOES BY POST, by 17:00 on 8 January 2027 for spring: original degree certificates and transcripts with an apostille or consular verification, a family relations or birth certificate, a bank balance certificate and a health check. Dormitory residents add a chest X-ray.

THE BANK BALANCE IS 15,840,000 WON, or 6,240,000 if you hold AKS's Government Grant, in your name or an immediate family member's, issued within 30 days. A family member's account also needs AKS's sponsorship letter and a family relations certificate. AKS's FAQ still says 9,500,000; this is the Spring 2027 guide's figure.

A scholarship from another body that pays your tuition and living costs can replace the bank certificate, with its confirmation letter.

The fee is 50,000 won or 50 USD and is not refunded once paid.

PhD applicants whose master's had a thesis also email a soft copy of it before the interview.

All requirements

• You and both parents are foreign nationals, or you did all your schooling, primary school to university, outside Korea
• A master's needs a bachelor's degree by the start of the semester, in any subject. A PhD needs a master's, normally in a related major
• TOPIK or TOPIK IBT level 4 or higher, valid on the deadline. Level 5 or 6 is given preference
• MOST COURSES ARE TAUGHT IN KOREAN, and you must reach TOPIK 6 to graduate
• Selection is on your documents, then a video or in-person interview
• You apply online at studyinkorea.go.kr and pay the fee there
• The tuition waiver lasts the coursework years and is lost only on academic probation or disciplinary action
